The 55th Virginia Infantry Regiment is one of the best documented American Civil War Confederate units, and therefore one of the most interesting to study.

There are 46 extant pictures by its best known soldier, the artist Allen Redwood, which provide a unique insight into its appearance and activities at various stages of the war. Many of these pictures were created to illustrate the nine articles that he wrote about the regiment.

Its 1,324 Compiled Service Records, in the U.S. National Archives, are exceptionally complete; and a large number of action reports, journals, letters, and primary source articles have survived.

This site is prepared by the author of the regiment's volume of the Virginia Regimental Histories Series.
